Algoma Country at a Glance
Fringed by Lake Huron and Lake Superior, Algoma Country attracts anglers, canoeists,
kayakers and hunters. Sault Ste.
Marie, situated at the joint of the lakes and the hometown of Canada's first
female astronaut Roberta Bondar, offers opportunities for every visitor. Summer
brings hiking and kayaking excursions, while winter offers numerous groomed trails
ideal for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. History buffs and forest firefighters
converge on the Canadian
Bushplane Heritage Centre, where exhibits take a look at the history of forest
fire protection in Canada. The Algoma Central Railway features single-day excursions
of the Agawa Canyon, and its surrounding forests and waterfalls during warmer
months, or the region blanketed in white on the winter Snow Train. Visit Winnie
the Pooh's birthplace of White
River, or the former gold-mining town of Wawa.
Several provincial parks, such as Pancake
Bay Provincial Park or Batchawana
Bay Provincial Park, offer adventures such as swimming, hiking, or staying
in one of many campgrounds.
